The Psychedelic Guide
The Psychedelic Guide
Principles for Advancing Psychospiritual Transformation
As psychedelics enter clinical and therapeutic settings, the field demands guides of extraordinary depth. The biomedical model often overlooks the transpersonal, ethical, and social dimensions essential to healing work. This book offers a radical reimagining of what it means to hold space for transformation.

As psychedelics enter the mainstream—who will guide the guides?
About the Book
Drawing on decades of clinical experience, transpersonal psychology, somatics, and traditions of nondual wisdom, McCarroll offers a psychospiritual framework that brings depth, presence, and accountability to guiding. She situates psychedelic work within a wider movement of cultural renewal and defines guiding as both a personal calling and a social responsibility—where the guide becomes a healer within society and a bridge between individual healing and collective liberation.
The author looks at desire as a force for liberation, imagination as a tool for healing, and rites of passage as modes of initiation. Through guided reflection and practical applications, she equips psychedelic guides to deepen their self-awareness, navigate power and ethics, and translate mystical experiences into grounded practices.
The Psychedelic Guide offers the foundation needed in a field undergoing rapid expansion. It is a grounded, comprehensive manual for those called to facilitate safe, therapeutic, and sacred journeys.

Valeria McCarroll's "The Psychedelic Guide" is a tremendous resource for practitioners and trainers alike. Those who sit with people in psychedelic states hold enormous influence over the experience, and are more critical to therapeutic outcomes than the psychedelics themselves. Practitioners shape the healing process more than any protocol. As the trainers prepare the tens of thousands of practitioners this work will require, Valeria McCarroll asks us to take that seriously: training practitioners is essential to the successful introduction of psychedelics into mental health care around the world.
—Rick Doblin, PhD, founder and President of the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS)
Valeria McCarroll brings to this important and useful book a special authority earned by her unique integration of three practical bodies of knowledge needed to navigate the intense challenges posed by the use of substance-inducing consciousness transformations: a philosophical depth that can expose the seductions triggered by the speed and force of the visionary content; extensive training in the clinical psychotherapeutic strategies that sort out traumatic influences that can be set afoot by these substances; and a familiarity with ancient traditions that address the cultivation of refined states of consciousness in less dramatic ways by breathing, chanting, imagining, ritual movement and other such practices sustained over a long time. It is a promising aid for those brave guides who assist in these amazing journeys.
—Don Hanlon Johnson, PhD, Professor Emeritus CIIS; Author
As our field matures, we need training that honors both the rich multidimensionality of psychedelic practice and the paradoxical simplicity of non-dual awareness. Valeria McCarroll offers a wise and timely guide for those committed to cultivating right relationship with depth, discernment, and humility.
— Kylea Taylor, LMFT, Author of The Ethics of Caring
At a moment when psychedelic work is expanding faster than our frameworks for holding it responsibly, Valeria McCarroll presents exactly what the field has been missing: a rigorous, soulful articulation of what it means to guide with integrity. Valeria writes with the rare authority of someone who has done the inner work she asks of her readers. This book moves fluidly among transpersonal psychology, somatics, and lived clinical wisdom, offering the guide not only principles but a genuine practice for embodying them. The Psychedelic Guide should be required reading for anyone stepping into this role.
-Jayme MacNeil, author of Becoming Shamanka: Walking the Medicine Path
The Psychedelic Guide is a powerful call for personal accountability within the psychedelic space. McCarroll asks each of us to "do the work" first, and she beautifully walks that talk. Both humble and unapologetic, this book offers a framework for psychedelic care in this New Time — not by bypassing modern-day issues with spiritual psychobabble, but by boldly facing our personal and collective shadow with compassion, intention and rigorous study. Free from grandstanding and condescension, McCarroll's multidimensional vision honors the time-tested philosophies, lineages and wisdom practices of generations before us and cultures beyond us. Read it if you dare. Read it if you care.

The Psychedelic Guide is far more than a “guidebook for psychedelic guides”. In her exquisite new book, Dr. Valeria McCarroll has brilliantly interwoven the threads of ancient and modern wisdom to create a map for anyone considering the subject of psychedelics—whether it be as facilitator, traveler, or investigator of psychological and/or social phenomena and/or transformation.
The Question: When the doors of perception are flung open, what do we realize? The Revelation: Our awareness is greater than we thought.
As consciousness expands, imagination is freed. This release opens pathways to reframing and reformation—spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. And, though this process is highly personal, it has significant implications for the future of the collective.
So, I say to you now: People, get ready! And, let The Psychedelic Guide help you dream, negotiate, translate, name, and remember the most precious journeys of your life.

For anyone who is practicing, or considering, becoming a guide, and embarking on the journey to become an instrument of transformative change, a wayfinder for the liminal space between the worlds of ordinary and psychedelic realities, with impeccable integrity, consciousness and heart, this book is one you'll want to treasure and return to, often.
It offers an exquisite weaving of learning gleaned from diverse spiritual and psycho-spiritual traditions, with a lucid integration of social justice lenses that resonate deeply with our lived realities today.
As an essential ingredient, McCarroll describes the centrality of a guide's process of alchemizing one's own traumas, wounds and shadows toward becoming a refined and integral instrument of liberation and healing.
This richly woven guidebook offers a map toward becoming intimately conversant with the inner-outer fractal through which life always seems to manifest best.

Raising a much-needed lantern in the psychedelic depths, Valeria McCarroll has the authority of a seasoned clinician and the heart of a true elder-in-the-making. Her insistence that healing others must begin with the honest, unglamorous work of healing ourselves, will ideally result in a more careful, more humble, and more realistic approach to what this work can be.
–Carla Detchon, Host of the Psychedelic Divas podcast
Written with erudition and heart, Valeria McCarroll’s book takes the reader on a deep journey through the mythical, archetypal, and esoteric realms of the world soul. She makes it clear that any current or prospective psychedelic guide is a “midwife of the soul,” and thus encourages and challenges the guides to know themselves and the universal consciousness at the deepest level. This book should be mandatory reading for anyone contemplating the awesome responsibility of occupying the “seat of the guide."
